U.K. TV indies up foreign biz by 34%

LONDON -- Overseas revenues for U.K. indie TV production companies increased by 34% this past year, based on figures released Monday by local producers' org Pact. Foreign revenues are of accelerating importance towards the sector. The shingles produced 590 million ($973 million) from outdoors the U.K this year, which means 25% from the sector's total revenues, in comparison with 20% the year before. Worldwide sales of finished programs rose from $115 million to $143 million, and worldwide commissions from overseas tv stations rose from $488 million to $660 million. Within the U.K., growth was flat, because the BBC and Funnel 5 reduce home-grown fare. PACT Boss John McVay stated: "The U.K. indie sector has once more demonstrated itself skilled at finding and taking advantage of new possibilities and overseas marketplaces to ensure that it could deliver growth despite a set domestic marketplace for content." The figures were released in PACT's 2011 Census created by working as a consultant Oliver and Ohlbaum Affiliates. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Protestors in Japan back fired thesp

Tokyo -- Supporters of Sosuke Takaoka, a thesp fired from his agency for tweeting against the influx of Korean dramas on Japanese networks, protested his ouster at Fuji TV's headquarters in Tokyo's Daiba district on Sunday. Some 1,000 to 2,000 demonstrators marched to a Fuji-sponsored outdoor event from a nearby park, waving Japanese flags and shouting slogans, some with an anti-Korean flavor.Police assigned to the event did not attempt to disperse the protesters, though they did not have permission for the march.Takaoka did not participate, having said on his blog that, though he doesn't regret his comments, "I feel that the direction things have taken recently clearly differs (from what I intended)."Korean dramas and pop acts have invaded the Japanese market in what has been called the Korean wave ("hanryu" in Japanese). But Takaoka's ouster from Stardust Promotions has stirred a widespread anti-hanryu backlash on the Internet.Best known as husband of local megastar Aoi Miyazaki, Takaoka has a long list of supporting credits in major pics, including Takashi Miike's 2010 smash "13 Assassins." Also, major electronics makers intend to launch new Internet Televisions, as well as devoted remote controls, next spring over time for that service's bow. The goal would be to lure back audiences who're watching more video content on the Computers, less on the Televisions, with popular programming they can't easily get elsewhere. New set pics of Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises

A few pap shots of Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises have been unveiled online, and those of an anti-spoiler disposition may wish to avert their gaze now.The images don't reveal too much, though anyone wanting to go in cold will definitely be keen to give them a miss. The shots come from Just Jared (via Slashfilm), and they feature Tom Hardy's Bane standing atop a version of the Tumbler (AKA the Nolan-verse's Batmobile) with its original camouflage bodywork.Perhaps Bruce Wayne has ordered a new batch from Lucius Fox following the events of The Dark Knight? It's the first chance we've had to see Bane's clothing up close, as he sports a militaristic vest, cargo pants, and a rather dashing sheepskin trenchcoat. For those hankering for really spoilery material, look very closely at the final image: the photo that Bane is tearing up is a familiar face in Gotham. These pictures aren't the best quality and leave Bat-fans in an awkward bind. They don't exactly show off Bane in all his glory, as Nolan would surely want, but once this kind of thing is 'out there,' devotees can't help but want a peak. Just don't give us the temptation, dammit! Here are those images:The Dark Knight Rises will open on 20 July 2012.
